retell literacy center activity - The Fat Cat
Reading activities for kindergarten don't have to be worksheets or games! We have active literacy centers in our classroom like the retell center. This is how I created a 'The Fat Cat' retell activity to go in our retell center as an option for my kindergarten students. It was just a matter of scanning and printing pictures from the book. My kinders get to choose the book(s) they want to retell while they are at this literacy center. They read, they act, they use lots of great vocabulary and are developing fantastic reading habits all while continuing to build their love of reading.
The Fat Cat Retell (Literacy Center Activity)
It's one of my favorite literacy centers and we usually introduce The Fat Cat whenever my mom comes to visit. It was a favorite story of mine as a child, so she loves to carry on the tradition of being the first one to read it to my class. She does an amazing job of reading with intonation, so I carry it on making the pattern in this story easy to recall, kind of like in the gingerbread man.
Here are the props I gathered rather inexpensively (and you can too) to bring the book alive once we knew it by heart. I simply scanned in pages from the book of each character. After I laminated the, I added popsicle sticks onto the back using book tape (clear mailing tape).
